Meet Robby, Our Leander Pedal Steel Teacher

Robby Harris has played guitar since he was old enough to lift one, and he still teaches and performs on guitar regularly, both live and as a studio musician. But once he took up the pedal steel guitar, he fell in love with its beautiful sounds and quickly became one of Austin's most in-demand pedal steel players. Robby's current band, Next of Kin, was recently voted 'Best New Act 2026' in the Austin Chronicle's Music Awards, and Robby will be playing pedal steel with Next of Kin on the Lollapalooza stage in summer of 2026! Robby teaches pedal steel in person at our Leander school just northwest of Austin, which is convenient for students from Leander, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Jonestown - but for students farther out, Robby does also offer lessons online.

Why Pedal Steel Lessons Are Longer (and a Little Pricier)

Most of our lessons are 45 minutes per week, but pedal steel's the exception! Since it takes longer to get everything ready to play (and it's more work to transport it to/from the school), our pedal steel lessons are 1 hour 15 minutes long, allowing more time to perfect your setup, tune up, and still get a full, focused lesson. Since the lessons are longer, the pedal steel monthly rate is $329. Our pedal steel trial lesson is 1 hour 15 minutes, and costs $55, giving Robby time to really assess your goals, introduce the instrument, help with any gear setup questions, and show you what makes pedal steel so special.

About the Pedal Steel Guitar

The pedal steel guitar is an expressive, soulful instrument, with dreamy slides and lush chords. Popularized by legendary players like Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, and Paul Franklin, the pedal steel sound is a defining feature of classic and modern country music. You’ll hear it on records by George Jones, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and even modern artists like Kacey Musgraves and Phoebe Bridgers. But pedal steel isn’t just for country music! It shows up in ambient music, rock, indie folk, and even jazz. Bands like Pink Floyd, The Byrds, and Wilco have all used pedal steel to add texture and emotion to their sound. Originally evolved from Hawaiian lap steel guitars, the pedal steel features foot pedals and knee levers that let players bend strings mid-note for incredibly nuanced playing. If you decide to continue, our pedal steel lessons are $329/month for weekly 1 hour 15 minute sessions. That's more than our other instruments, but the price reflects the extra time and attention this beautiful and unique instrument requires.

How To Book a Pedal Steel Trial Lesson

Since the longer pedal steel lessons don't fit in our regular schedule openings, they can't be booked online - but we'll work with you to try to find a spot in Robby's schedule, most likely at the very beginning or end of his day. This means pedal steel lessons will probably be either before 2:00pm or after 8:30pm. Text us and let's work something out!

What You'll Need to Play Pedal Steel Guitar

Pedal steel is a magical instrument, but that sound takes more preparation than a traditional guitar! A pedal steel setup requires:
  • A specific type of seat
  • A volume pedal
  • An amp
  • At least 3 foot pedals and 4 knee levers
  • Patience to learn how it all works together
We recommend pedal steel for older students, or those with previous guitar or music theory experience. While beginners are welcome, it's a mechanically complex instrument, and we want to make sure you're set up for success. If you don't have your own pedal steel yet, that's okay! You can still try a trial session to get a feel for it before going any further - but if you decide to continue, you'll definitely need your own pedal steel at home to be able to practice, and they can be pricey, depending on where you get it. Our pedal steel teacher, Robby Harris, can offer advice on purchasing or renting your first instrument.

After you attend your first lesson, watch for an email from us with the subject "Thank you for attending!" That email will have all the info you need to pay your first monthly invoice and reserve your weekly spot.

We'll hold your spot for a couple days, and we'll reach out via text before giving it away to another student. If you'd like a different time or teacher than the one you attended for your trial, or you don't receive that email, text us at 512-817-3663 and we'll help you reserve your weekly spot.

(If you take a trial lesson and decide not to sign up, please text to let us know, so we can open that spot back up sooner. Thanks!)

We're located in Leander, TX, just northwest of Austin. The Live Music Capital of the World is in our backyard!

Our school's on S. Bagdad Rd between Crystal Falls and Hero Way, facing Robin Bledsoe Park. That's just a few minutes from Leander High School, and also close to Old Town Leander.

We're not large enough for a front office staff, so we're an appointment-only establishment. If you have questions or need help, the best way to reach us is via text at 512-817-3663. (Please use text rather than calling. Our phone number doesn't work with voice calls, but we check and respond to texts frequently!) You can also reach out in email at staff@vividmusicschool.com.

For private lessons, ages 4 to around 110. (Theoretically, of course. We haven’t hit our upper age limit yet.)

Our minimum age to start private music lessons is four years old, but success with children that young depends greatly on how involved the parents are at practice time. As for adults – at the time of this writing, our student holding the elder record is 82 years young!

(Note: Saxophone lessons are an exception due to the weight of the instrument, so our minimum starting age for new saxophone students is 10 years old.)

Most of our lessons are private, one-on-one lessons, in 45-minute timeslots. However, if two students sign up together in the same 45-minute time slot, we offer a 60% discount for the second student!

We also have two audition-only Rock Bands that rehearse on Sunday evenings.
